How Cool is Ski Touring in Norway : Backcountry Skiing Summit to Sea
Of all the places where we were lucky to put our skis on, Norway is for sure one of the best…
Imagine yourself skiing sea view, among the white snow that contrasts with the blue sky in an enchanted fjord: Spectacular!
These are the ingredients of Our Ski Touring Trip in Norway, and now we are taking you on this Magic Adventure.
WHERE WE ARE: Our Ski Touring Trip in Norway takes place in the North of the country, beyond the Arctic Circle. Don’t think it’s as cold as the North Pole! In the period between the end of March and April, the temperatures are completely similar to those of our Alps, perhaps even a little warmer, thanks to the Gulf Stream which mitigates this area.
Our journey starts from Tromso, with its International Airport that guarantees us a perfect arrival and departure base for our week-long Ski Tour.
Tromso, also known as the Capital of the Arctic, is a city in all the aspects, not huge but friendly. Young and animated, Tromso is also a famous University Center that attracts students from all over Europe and beyond. Here we decided to spend the first few days to warm up our legs a bit while waiting to ski the wild Lyngen Alps, which will be the highlight of this Ski Touring Trip in Norway. Staying in the city center we have a lot of options at hand for the first ski touring itineraries, with the convenience of having bars, pubs and restaurants to go out for dinner in the evening.
The skiing in Tromso is wonderful, a juicy appetizer for the next days.
After the first few days, from Tromso we move East with our van, leaving the city and entering in the Real Norway: fjords, bridges, ferries and mountains overlooking the sea, just the car journey is worth the ticket price!!!
We are now in the Majestic Lyngen Alps and, we must admit, these mountains fascinate us every time as if it were the first time: the views are truly breathtaking!
The Lyngen Alps are a sub-chain of the Scandinavian Mountains, and also give their name to the region, the Lyngen Peninsula, with its huge fjord.
It’s named “Alps” because their rocky conformation is very reminiscent of our home mountains. The difference is that here the highest peak does not exceed 2.000 meters and these mountains plunge headlong into the sea. Here we have really ENDLESS possibilities of Ski Touring Itineraries, for all tastes.
Just think that since 2016, the date of our first trip, we haven’t skied just the half of all possible descents here in the Lyngen Alps: there’s plenty to explore here 🙂
WHAT WE DO: The Ski Touring Trip in Norway between Tromso and Lyngen Alps is a Backcountry Ski Mountaineering and Snowboard Tour (Splitboard). In this place it is absolutely not in our interest to take you skiing with the lifts, so you will have to rely only on your legs which will be your engine!
Ski Touring here is wonderful, and starting from zero altitude (at sea level) helps a lot with the vertical drop and the effort. Regarding this, all the Itineraries that we propose, both in our Group or Individual Departures, range from a minimum of 400 to a maximum of 1200 meters of vertical drop. The slopes are all very gentle, the descents are super panoramic and very funny with guaranteed sea view! Absolutely nothing extreme and all the itineraries are suitable for an audience of Ski Mountaineers and Snowboarders of all skill levels, as long as they already know skiing or snowboarding with backcountry skins.
The destination is also perfect for our Splitboarder friends: with their splittable snowboard they will enjoy slopes and terrain suitable for them too.
